1. How Google creates fear, uncertainty and doubt
Fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) is a tactic used in sales, marketing, public relations, politics and propaganda. Google uses this method to get more people to their paid search offering.

Google gives contradicting advice

Some time ago, Google published a search engine optimization starter guide. On page 14 of the guide, they show an example of a good natural backlink:



Today, Google thinks that such a link is 'over optimized'. If you followed Google's advice in the past, you might have problems today (or not).

Google sends warning messages even if the links are natural

Many webmasters receive unnatural link warning messages although their rankings haven't changed. Some webmasters even get unnatural link warnings for organic links:

"Now after our last reconsideration request was declined we get the message that there are still bad links out there. This is what we were told was one of the bad links [...]

The so called 'money keyword link' was chosen by sustainablog itself, probably because they thought it would best describe what we do. We have no influence on this, and we certainly have no interest in ranking for 'Guide To Recycling'-

This is a completely legitimate post and it was not influenced by us in any way. They are writing about a campaign we are running."

Google could simply ignore bad backlinks. Instead of this, they prefer to confuse webmasters with contradicting messages. 

Why does Google do this?

It might be that Google is using these FUD techniques to attract less tech-savvy people to AdWords. Although nothing actually happened to their rankings, Google's contradicting messages worry many website owners.

Google earns more if you advertise your site on AdWords. They don't care if high rankings in the organic results are better for your business.

If you want a return-on-investment (ROI) that is much higher than the ROI that you get with your Google AdWords campaigns, get your website on the first page of Google's regular search results. If you do the right things, in the right order, your website will get high rankings on Google that last:

  1. Optimize the content of your web pages so that Google and other search engines show them for the right keywords.
  2. Create good content so that other websites link to your site.
  3. Do not try to cheat Google and other search engines.

Google's John Mueller: send detailed reconsideration requests

"Your last reconsideration request was a bit short & basic, which when taken on its own, gave the team a wrong impression about the steps you've taken to resolve this issue on the web. [...]

My general recommendation for reconsideration requests would be to make sure that you're really submitting the right & relevant information there, so that it's clear to those processing the request what steps you've taken to resolve this issue."



Matt CuttsGoogle's Matt Cutts: don't expect a personal answer
In a video on YouTube, Google's Matt Cutts says that they get 5,000 reconsideration requests per week. In January, Google had taken manual action on 400,000 different websites. According to Matt Cutts, talking to webmasters isn't Google's first priority so you should not expect a very personal reply to your reconsideration requests.



Google AdWords is a bad parent

"Why not put all the 'basic' or 'standard' features in Express, and then create an 'advanced' version for the rest of us with all the levers and dials? Kind of like video games: there is a simple mode with just a few controls, and there is an advanced mode with lots of options. When I’m playing video games, I want to keep it simple; when I’m managing PPC, I want all the controls.

Google, please stop treating us like children. Many of us are PPC grownups. Please give us the control we’ve earned."
