1. Four types of backlinks that your website can get

Backlinks are still the most important factor when it comes to high rankings on Google. If you want to see your website on Google's first result page, then you must make sure that your site has as many good backlinks as possible.

There are 4 different types of text links that can appear on a web page. You can use all of them to create a powerful backlink profile that will strengthen the position of your website on Google:

four different backlink types

1. The informational backlink

Informational backlinks lead to pages that offer more information related to the words that are linked in the text.

For example, you could write about the websites with the most backlinks in 2011. The linked text goes to a page that contains the details.

How to get informational backlinks to your website:

  • Use the "Find websites by keyword search" option in the "Add sites" command in IBP's link manager.
  • Search for "keyword +resources" and similar phrases to find websites that deal with the topic of your website and then suggest the linkable content of your site as a resource.

2. The definitional backlink

Definitional backlinks provide an extended definition of the linked words.

How to get definitional backlinks to your website:

  • Create a detailed glossary that explains the terminology of your branch and make these pages easy to find. People who write about your branch will link to your glossary to define the terms.

3. The referential backlink

Referential backlinks are used for source citation: the Swedish website with the most backlinks in 2011 was MySQL.com. IKEA.com follows at third place.

How to get referential backlinks:

  • Create linkable content on your web pages. This could be infographics, statistics, etc.
  • Use the blog search command in IBP's link manager to find blogs that are related to your business. Inform them about your linkable resources.

4. The promotional backlink

Promotional links are backlinks that go to a landing page: How to get top 10 rankings on Google with a single software tool that helps you with all aspects of SEO.

How to get promotional backlinks:

  • Use the link manager in IBP to find sites that are related to your site.
  • Barter with other websites. If they link to your site, you could link to their site. Offer other incentives to link to your site (free product samples, etc.).
  • Use the "Find related blogs" command in IBP's link manager and ask the found bloggers for a review of your site.

The backlinks of your website determine the position of your web pages on Google. Use the link manager in IBP to get more backlinks to your site. If you want to get a detailed overview of the backlinks of your own website (and the backlinks of your competitors, analyze your backlinks with SEOprofiler.

2. Search engine news and articles of the week

Yahoo now displaying Bing results in more countries

"We are excited to announce that the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance continues its strong global momentum today with the algorithmic transition to Microsoft in seven additional countries plus Yahoo! Maktoob MENA (Middle East and North Africa).

Now consumers in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Russia, the Netherlands, Sweden, plus several countries in MENA (in Arabic language), are able to enjoy a competitive choice in search."

John MuellerYour rankings will suffer if your website is often down

Google's John Mueller explains in an online discussion:

"Temporary downtime is something we're certainly aware of, and which our algorithms can work around -- downtime for two weeks however is almost certainly something that will have some short-term, visible effects.

Over time, as we're able to recrawl the pages that failed (keep in mind that this needs to be done on a page-by-page basis), this should settle back down again. Also, from the looks of it, we would likely crawl more content from your site, but our algorithms are slowing down as we notice the response-time for the pages from your server. I understand that speeding a site up is not always easily possible, but if you need to have your content crawled faster, it's important that Googlebot is able to do so with a reasonable speed."

Google expands sitelinks to 12

"Sitelinks will now be full-size links with a URL and one line of snippet text—similar to regular results—making it even easier to find the section of the site you want. We’re also increasing the maximum number of sitelinks per query from eight to 12. [...]

In addition, we’re making a significant improvement to our algorithms by combining sitelink ranking with regular result ranking to yield a higher-quality list of links. This reduces link duplication and creates a better organized search results page. Now, all results from the top-ranked site will be nested within the first result as sitelinks, and all results from other sites will appear below them."

YouTubeGoogle dominates online video

"Google Sites, driven primarily by video viewing at YouTube.com, ranked as the top online video content property in July with 158.1 million unique viewers, while VEVO ranked second with 62.1 million. Facebook.com climbed to the #3 position with 51.4 million viewers, followed by Microsoft Sites with 49.5 million and Viacom Digital with 47.3 million."

Watch out for botnet-driven Google dorks

"Google Dorks have been around for a while, as the name for an attack where hackers scan web sites, using commonly used links within company networks, to see if there are any unsecure links that can be used to break into a company’s web site."
