1. Facts of the week: Is Open Source the future of search?
Last year, we informed you about the start of Nutch, an open source search engine project that tries to compete with the major players in the search engines market. What has happened since then? It's time to take a look if the efforts to build an open source search engine have led to results.

Which open source search engines are available?

The first search engine that uses the Nutch open source search engine index is MozDex. Although MozDex is still struggling with technical problems, its results are becoming better every week. According to Alexa.com, MozDex has become one of the 34,000 most popular web sites on the web.

Another search engine that uses the Nutch algorithm is ObjectSearch. ObjectSearch doesn't seem to be as sophisticated as MozDex but it is a start.

Now another project has entered the market for open search technology. The German SuMa project formed a group that tries to "build a decentral, cooperative and non-monopolistic search engine structure". SuMa is a brand-new project that hasn't released any results yet.

Why are open search engines important?

The search engine market consolidates and there are only a few major search engines that process the majority of searches. The Nutch project describes it as follows:

"Web search is a basic requirement for internet navigation, yet the number of web search engines is decreasing. Today's oligopoly could soon be a monopoly, with a single company controlling nearly all web search for its commercial gain. That would not be good for users of the internet.

Only open source search results can be fully trusted to be without bias. (Or at least their bias is public.)

All existing major search engines have proprietary ranking formulas, and will not explain why a given page ranks as it does.

Additionally, some search engines determine which sites to index based on payments, rather than on the merits of the sites themselves."

Further information about open source search engines can be found here:

What does this mean to your web site?

Open-source search engines are a promising option for the future. Until free search engines gain more market share, we have to deal with the current search engine situation.

Today, it's important to have good rankings in Google, Yahoo and other major search engines. If you want to improve the ranking of your web site in these major search engines, take a look at IBP.

2. Search engine news of the week

Yahoo buys web e-mail firm

"Yahoo escalated its newfound rivalry with Google by acquiring Oddpost, a San Francisco startup known for its innovative e-mail service.

The acquisition will allow Yahoo to fold Oddpost's Web-based e-mail service into its own Yahoo Mail offering, creating a product that has the potential to draw subscribers away from Google's much-touted Gmail service."

Google plans to list on Nasdaq for IPO

"Google Inc. plans to list on the Nasdaq Stock Market for its impending initial public stock offering, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. [...] Google officials did not specify a date for its IPO or a ticker symbol in the SEC filing Monday."

Sensis to launch search engine

"The search engine will look not only for websites, but will also rely upon listings in Sensis' White and Yellow Pages and its online site Whereis and CitySearch."

Editor's note: Sensis.com.au is already supported by IBP and ARELIS.

Alleged hacker now works for Microsoft

"A man accused of hacking into search engine company AltaVista's computer systems about two years ago is now employed by Microsoft Corp., reportedly working on search technology. [...]

Federal prosecutors allege that Chavet hacked into AltaVista's computer system to obtain software blueprints called source code and recklessly caused damage to AltaVista's computers."

Google launches a new version of Google Groups

The new beta version looks similar to Google's Gmail service.

In name dispute, it's Googles vs. Google

"The company that owns and operates Googles.com, said Wednesday it has initiated trademark proceedings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office against Google. [...]

The trademark filing is not the only legal problem to surface recently for Google. Last week, Silicon Valley start-up Affinity Engines filed a lawsuit against the search company, claiming that a Google engineer stole software code to create Orkut.com, a popular social networking service."

"Highly recommend IBP and ARELIS as a total web package."

"I would like to recommend your product. I have previously hired a large firm to get my web site at the top of 2 chosen words relevant to our bikini site. Needless to say, their results were not even close and I have found a way to do it myself. Their excuse - They are very popular searches and its hard to get to the top.

Have control over your web site and don't pay ongoing fees! Highly recommend IBP and ARELIS as a total web package."
