1. How many link partners are there? How many are enough?
Exchanging links with other sites is a promising way to increase your Google PageRank and to draw visitors to your site. Good incoming links have a positive effect on your search engine rankings and they also bring targeted visitors to your web site. A recent article in the eCommerce Times summarized it:
"Treat reciprocal linking as a branding function for your business. Set out to get as many links to your site from other appropriate, relevant sites as possible. Start now, and never stop.

Eventually, you will be king of the link hill in your area of interest. And you will be very hard to knock down, unless someone else is as determined as you are. More than likely, they won't be."

But how many potential link partners are there, and what is a realistic goal for your linking campaigns? How many link partners should you have?

The statistics

According to http://www.webhosting.info/domains/country_stats/ there are more than 20 million US domains, 2 million domains from Germany, 2 million domains from United Kingdom, about 1.5 million domains from Canada and about 1 million domains from France. So according to this site, there are more than 30 million domains in total.

According to http://www.dailychanges.com there are even about 38 million domains, and according to Denic.de there are more than 7 million domains from Germany.

It seems that there is no accurate total number of domains so let's say there are about 30-40 million domains.

To calculate the number of potential link partners, we have to lower the number of 30-40 mill. domains considerably because most companies own several domains at once. For example, Microsoft owns microsoft.com, msn.com, hotmail.com, msnbc.com, microsoft.de, microsoft.fr, msn.ca, msn.co.uk, and many, many more.

Then we have to decrease the number once again because big companies such as Vodafone, Toyota, Microsoft or Bank One will probably not answer to link request mails.

In addition, we have to cut down the number of potential link partners by the number of domains from countries whose language we don't understand. They probably wouldn't understand our link request message, either.

The technical aspects

We have to take into account that every search engine indexes only a small part of the whole World Wide Web. Some domains have fallen out of the search engine indexes, some domains have changed their owners and a lot domains are redirections and not connected to the Internet at all.

Besides, it's difficult to find many different link partners because search engines only return 1000 results at maximum per search request, even if they display "results 1-10 of about 7,380,000". Just try to get beyond the 100th result page and you'll see that it's not possible.

For instance, let's search for "humor" at Google. Google tells us that there are more than 24,600,000 results, yet we cannot get past the 999th result.

What does it mean to you?

If we take all those factors into account, there are probably only less than 1 million domains remaining who could be potential link partners for you.

On the positive side, most link partners can publish your link on several of their domains. In addition, they can link back from one of their domains to several of your domains.

At the end of the day, remember that it's not the quantity of links that counts but the quality.

It's also important that the web sites that are linking to you have a similar topic as your site. If you sell flowers on your web page, then links from other flower pages count more than a link from a web site that links to all kind of sites.

This means that even a few dozen links from popular sites that have a similar topic as your site can be sufficient to get a better ranking as a site with 15,000 web sites linking to it.

Our link building tool ARELIS can help you to locate web sites that could be great link partners for your site. ARELIS helps you to find quality web sites, it helps you to contact the webmasters of these web sites and it helps you to easily manage and create your link pages. 2. Search engine news of the week

Rule may compel Google to open books

"Privately held Google appears to have triggered a provision of the 1934 Securities and Exchange Act that requires it to disclose closely guarded financial details by the end of the month.

The filing, with the Securities and Exchange Commission, would reveal so much about the secretive firm that many experts believe Google might take the next logical step and file for an initial stock offering, reaping the financial rewards that go along with having to open its books."

Amazon starts its own search engine

Amazon has started its own search engine. The search engine with the name A9 searches the web as well as Amazon's book database. A toolbar is also available. A9 uses Google' search results and displays at least two paid AdWord listings per result. This new search engine also rises privacy concerns.

MSN updates searchable news site

"MSN's searchable news site was updated Thursday with more personalization features, following in the newbie footsteps of Amazon.com's search engine." Further information about Microsoft's latest developments can be found in the Microsoft sandbox.

Google shifts trademark policy

"Google has changed the trademark-related guidelines for its AdWords program; it will now allow U.S. and Canadian advertisers to use others' trademarks as keywords."

Google to target Web surfers by city

"Google on Thursday will introduce capabilities for U.S. and international advertisers to reach Web surfers by their city of origin - a move that represents the search site's latest push for ad sales."

HotBot releases an extended version of the HotBot Desktop

"The HotBot Desktop allows you to easily search the web while not losing the context of where you are in the results. [...] After customizing what and when to index, you'll be able to search local files, email (Outlook & Outlook Express), browser history, and RSS subscriptions. The HotBot Desktop creates a local index to allow you to quickly find local content as you are on or offline."

Search engine loyalty exists

"Results from a recent survey indicate that 56.7 percent of Internet users use the same search engine or directory when they are looking for information, and another 30.5 percent of Web users have a few specific search engines they use regularly. A small amount of Web users, 12.8 percent, said they use a different search engine each time, depending on what they are looking for at that moment. This shows that search engine loyalty truly exists across a vast (87.2) majority of Web users."

Google to consider Gmail changes

"Google said Tuesday it is 'batting about' possible changes to its Gmail Web-based e-mail service, which launched last month to a chorus of privacy concerns."

3. Articles of the week

Will Yahoo woo Jeeves from Google?

"As the rivalry between Google and Yahoo heats up, Ask Jeeves is shaping up as a coveted pawn in the chess match between the two leading search and portal companies. [...] Will Overture try to woo Ask Jeeves back from Google?"

Gmail likely to clear U.K. privacy hurdles

"Google's forthcoming e-mail service probably won't run into legal issues in Britain, as long as the company doesn't deceive customers about how their personal information will be treated."

Privacy group steps up Gmail complaints

"London-based Privacy International, which has offices in the United States and Europe, said it has filed complaints with privacy and data-protection regulators in Australia, Canada and 15 countries in Europe.

'Privacy International alleges that the Gmail service violates privacy law, both in Europe and in other countries. The complaint identifies a wide range of possible breaches of European Union law,' director Simon Davies told Reuters."

If Google ogles your e-mail, will Ashcroft be far behind?

"Google ought to engage privacy advocates in a thorough debate over their concerns. As it does so, it should work to make its privacy policies crystal clear. And it should give customers a choice to opt-in to, rather than opt-out of, the targeted ads, as the company said it is considering."

Can Google hit it out of the park again?

"Now, Google is ramping up to take on the giants of the Net. On Mar. 31, the company announced that it would soon unveil a new e-mail service, dubbed Gmail. If successful, the move could rattle the Internet business. [...]

But it's a precarious time to take on entrenched incumbents, especially since Google is experimenting with a risky new business model."
